Updated Gingerbread image for gen8

Friday, July 8th, 2011

BuBU has built an image based on the latest openAOS and CM code:

  • improved bluetooth (BT HID confirmed working)
  • workaround for web browser crash
  • default homepage is openaos.org
  • Archos community bookmarks
  • other

The latest image is openaos-gingerbread-gen8-20110708_183154.img.gz (md5sum).
Confirmed working with boot menu version featured here.

If you are new please be warned that this is still experimental and bugs are expected, for installation instructions continue reading here.

Gen7 code compiles but is not ready for public images. If you want to build it yourself for gen7 or gen8 here are some instructions.

gingerbread, another update

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

< _BuBU> dm8tbr: time for new anouncement? :D
< _BuBU> openaos-gingerbread-20110628_122823.img.gz
< _BuBU> ATTENTION !! new zImage/initramfs.cpio.gz are required (else accelerometer will not work the right way on A101
< _BuBU> so:
< _BuBU> – accelerometer should work
< _BuBU> – both sdcard and storage should be mounted
< _BuBU> – bigger home/menu/back buttons..
< _BuBU> – update from upstream cyanogenmod (so regression or improvements expected)
< _BuBU> for the accelerometer you may have to active 180 degrees into cyanogenmod display settings

Gingerbread CM now for Archos – Proof of concept

Friday, June 24th, 2011

Bubu sat down and made Cyanogenmod Gingerbread Android 2.3 working in his spare time. This is a proof of concept so don’t expect too much.

Currently working:

  • SGX/EGL 3D acceleration
  • WiFi
  • Touchscreen
  • adb
  • Android Market

Not working:

  • Audio
  • Bluetooth
  • Accelerometer
  • accelerated Video decoding
  • Suspend
  • TS calibration on A28/A32/A43

Known problems:

  • general instability / random crashes
  • Touchscreen has problems on the A101
  • hard to use on resistive TS models due to missing calibration

We’re looking for help to take this further. As this can’t be done by one person alone.

If you want to try it. It currently works on gen8 with latest openAOS boot menu:

http://download.openaos.org/bubu/gen8/android/openaos-gingerbread-poc_2011062301.img.gz
http://download.openaos.org/bubu/gen8/android/openaos-gingerbread-poc_2011062301.img.gz.md5sum

You need to gunzip and copy it into the root directory of your device, then add it to your menu.lst.

Sources are here:

https://gitorious.org/openaos-cyanogenmod
(Currently this is only vendor/archos/gen8 and device/archos/gen8, so you need to first “clone” the master branch of CyanogenMod)

Join us on IRC if you want to have a chat about it. This also has potential for the A5IT/A48IT but it needs volunteers that will help to make that happen.

Here we come again, alpha3 of FroYo for A5IT

Saturday, October 30th, 2010

It’s been a while, we all were very busy and as nobody new stepped up to help with things this alpha3 took longer than it was expected. It would have taken even longer but we decided to make a cut and release what we have so far.

The following tickets were resolved on our way to alpha3:

#121 Change mount location of internal storage defect

and for the beta1 target:

Again: Send patches! Discuss on the mailing list! Show some support by investing some time into this. Things don’t do themselves magically.

Keep in mind:
  • In general this is still alpha grade code so don’t expect wonders in stability and functionality.
  • If you find an issue that is not yet reported then file a new issue! If you do not report it we don’t know it and nobody can notice it and try to resolve it!
  • This is still not really intended for the average end user. If you are one, don’t come complaining that “stuff doesn’t work”. Just be happy that some ‘stuff’ works. ;)
  • Please note that we had to disable the Android root console on cdc-acm-serial1 due to stability problems. You should use ADB instead!
  • We require a working installation of the regular 1.6 Archos firmware as FroYo depends on a few files found in it!

Alpha3 is tested and works together with this zImage and this initramfs.
Please install those or preferably most recent before reporting bugs.

Oh yeah, if you just want the image: here it is and the md5sum.
Everyone else please follow the guide on the wiki which will help you install the most recent release.
Special thanks to Janis605 for creating the wonderful boot animation for us!

JBMM announces a bounty for 3G/UMTS drivers for gen7/gen8

Monday, September 20th, 2010

We’ve been in contact with JBMM over this for a while now on a certain subject. Now they went public and have announced a bounty for the first person to bring an full featured driver for a mobile-broadband-USB modem to gen7/gen8.

We don’t know yet how this will look on gen8 or if maybe Archos did some more work on gen8 than on gen7, but we are eager to see how things develop.

This is more than just compiling a few kernel modules, this needs also actual Android-support.

Here’s the full announcement and in english courtesy of google translation.
