Linux Kernel 2.6.35.3 for gen7

Monday, March 21st, 2011

http://gitorious.org/archos-linux/archos-linux-2-6-35-3

As mentioned before, here it is. :-)

I bet nicktime won’t say no if someone wants to help him and send useful patches.

I also hear that he was able to compile the PVR module and boot MeeGo handset ux with that kernel too. Nice times!

Linux kernel 2.6.35 boots on a gen7 unit (A5IT), first steps with Ubuntu userland too.

Nicktime has been working hard to get a 2.6.35 kernel running. There is still a lot of work left to be done before this could be really useful, but nevertheless it’s really nice to see all the progress around Archos hardware!

Currently the kernel is stable enough to even bring up Ubuntu with working touch-screen. That’s about it though and there is no GPU acceleration or anything, so things are very slow.

Please do not misunderstand this. This is a very early stage and there is nothing usable for now. Do not come asking for it! Once there is something that doesn’t crash and burn we’ll surely let you know. To give you some context:

< nicktime> ok, There's actually one thing it can do right now. Mahjongg!

If you are experienced with Linux kernel hacking and other low level programming I’m sure Nicktime would appreciate some help! As always we’re hanging out on IRC.

I also hear that the 2.6.35 Linux Kernel code will soon come to a GIT repository. Happy hacking times ahead!

How to wire up an Archos70 (gen8) for UART access.

Friday, March 18th, 2011

A quick info how to wire up your gen8 Archos 70 for UART access.

The reservations from the previous guide for gen6/gen7 do apply. Don’t connect this directly to RS-232!

And AV500 adds this information: “this is the back side of the PCB, to get to it disconnect LCD and TSP and remove PCB from the case…”

This should prove useful for those that want to work on gen8 up-stream kernel support or just need reliable console access without blocking up the USB port.
